Equipment for determination of tyre deformation behaviour under real driving conditions
Abstract
Within the scope of a research project, financed by the German Association for Research in Automobile Technology (FAT), a measuring device, with which the contours of complete tyre side walls can be measured during real driving operation in the internal drum test bench, was developed at the Institute for Automotive Technology at the Universität Karlsruhe (TH). This non-contact working measuring device uses the light-section principle and was adapted directly to the 6-component measuring hub. This not only allows the registration of the side wall contour, but also the determination of all forces and moments, which affect the tyre. With this measuring equipment different tyres of varying size were analysed during different operation conditions. Extreme conditions (tyre loads up to 15,000 N and camber angles up to 20°) were also taken into account. The greatest lateral deformations could be found in the area of the contact patch, whereas tread displacements up to 65 mm were measured. Increasing the tyre load resulted in a strong increase of the lateral deformation. Extreme deformations could be observed when the tyre was operated with a camber angle of 10° and slip angle of -10°, so that the tyre side wall touched the track surface. Since the tyre deformation and the tyre affecting forces and moments were measured simultaneously, the respective lateral displacement of the point of tyre load incidence could be determined additionally. It could be observed that the point of tyre load incidence was displaced strongly but not to the same degree as the tread.
